Masterbatch production is the process of creating concentrated mixtures of pigments and/or additives encapsulated within a polymer carrier. These masterbatches provide color or enhanced functionality to plastic products, ensuring uniform dispersion, consistent coloring, and improved quality compared to direct pigment addition.
A masterbatch consists of plastic pellets containing concentrated amounts of colorants or functional additives such as UV stabilizers, antioxidants, antistatic agents, and flame retardants. These are mixed and extruded into a carrier material compatible with the final polymer application.
Depending on its purpose, the masterbatch process can be classified into four main types.
Type of masterbatches
COLOR MASTERBATCH
Used to provide plastics with consistent and vivid coloration.
Includes standard shades (white, black, red, blue, green) as well as custom-designed or special-effect pigments such as metallic, pearlescent, or fluorescent finishes.
ADDITIVE MASTERBATCH
Enhances functional performance without affecting color.
Incorporates UV stabilizers, antioxidants, antistatic agents, slip and antiblock agents, and flame retardants to improve the plastic’s behavior and durability.
FILLER MASTERBATCH
Used to reduce production costs and improve mechanical performance by replacing part of the base polymer with fillers like calcium carbonate or talc.
Provides higher stiffness, better printability, and improved dimensional stability
SPECIALTY MASTERBATCH
Developed for advanced functionalities such as conductivity, biodegradability, infrared reflection, or antimicrobial protection.
Advantages of the masterbatch process
Consistent Quality
Uniform pigment and additive distribution ensures color accuracy, mechanical stability, and compliance with industry standards.
Cost Efficiency
Concentrated formulations reduce raw material waste, simplify production, and improve overall process economy.
Customization Flexibility
Allows manufacturers to tailor appearance and functionality — from UV resistance to brand-specific colors.
Safe Handling and Storage
Encapsulated additives minimize direct contact with raw materials and ensure safer operation.
Regulatory Compliance
Designed to meet international safety and environmental standards such as REACH and RoHS.
Applications of masterbatch
PACKAGING INDUSTRY
Ensures visual consistency and enhanced performance in food-grade packaging, shrink films, and containers through the use of color and additive masterbatches.
AUTOMOTIVE
Improves durability, aesthetics, and thermal resistance of components such as dashboards, trims, and bumpers through UV-stabilized and IR-reflective masterbatches.
CONSTRUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Used in pipes, panels, and roofing systems where filler and additive masterbatches increase strength, weather resistance, and insulation performance.
CONSUMER GOODS
Enhances aesthetics and functionality in household appliances, furniture, and toys. Incorporates antimicrobial and anti-slip additives to improve safety and hygiene.
AGRICULTURE
Provides UV resistance and environmental protection in greenhouse films, irrigation systems, and silage wraps, extending product lifespan.
TEXTILE INDUSTRY
Enables uniform coloration, UV stability, and flame retardancy in fibers and nonwoven fabrics used across apparel and industrial textiles.
